I am Kalle A. Piirainen, and here you will find some background information about me and this webpage. In fact this page is a complement to my LinkedIn profile, expanding it especially in terms of my academic activities. Thus I will be posting here information about my past and current projects, publications and also hopefully short pieces of reflections what I have learned through those activities.
This blog will be bilingual, in English and Finnish, I will post general information in English, but depending on the anticipated audience, I may write some conversation pieces in Finnish as well.

I work currently as an Assistant Professor (Forsker) at Technical University of Denmark – DTU (Danmarks Tekniske Universitet) at DTU Management Engineering Department (or Faculty), Technology and Innovation Management Division (Department). Additionally I’m an external Adjunct Professor (Dosentti) of Innovation and Software at LUT School of Business and Management, Lappeenranta University of Technology.
My research and teaching combines innovation studies, foresight and design. The main thrust of my work is to understand innovation and foresight better, to design more effective methods of working. The main application areas I have been working on are renewable energy and bioeconomy. The latest project I have worked on combines analysis of offshore wind service ecosystem and roadmapping.
Besides research, I teach Technology and Innovation Management, as well as Advanced Design Methods and Engineering Management. I have been engaged in research, development and innovation policy evaluation and advisory with Rambøll Management Consulting, the leading Scandinavian public sector consultancy, which has informed my research and vice versa. My consulting work specializes policy advisory, evaluation and research related to research, development and innovation policy.
